An entire weekend of handpan playing!

Over the two days you will work from the basics up. From core ideas such as technique, improvisation, composition, and theory; to more complex concetps such as phasing, harmonics, harmony and Indian rhythms. Participants will leave with enough material to practise for months, and a solid grounding in their handpan practise and musical understanding.

Handpans can be provided upon request.

An immersive weekend of music

Throughout this weekend of music you will go from the basics of handpan playing to being able to play melodies, grooves, and create your own musical ideas. You will leave with a solid understanding of the foundations of playing the handpan, and some of the key elements that go into music making. Key aspects of technique, theory, improvisation, and composition will be covered. You will have a chance to try various handpans and scales, and finish each day by playing music with other participants.

Topics covered

The basics of harmony : the building blocks of music which help us create beautiful and interesting melodies

Playing canons : a simple and powerful composition technique which can be played by small groups

Polyrhythms : how multiple rhythms make music sound more exciting and complex

Rhythmic cycles : creating patterns in time using simple numbers

Phasing : using phasing cycles to open up new creative possibilities and challenge your melodic and rhythmic perception.

Harmonic technique : learn to isolate ‘harmonics’ on your instrument, with double-handed and single-handed techniques.

Harmonic patterns : Use harmonics to build more intricate and beautiful melodies, and expand the tonality of your instrument.

Indian rhythms : how Indian rhythmic ideas can keep your playing fresh and exciting.

Composition : how studying form and help you create entire pieces that sound effortless and inevitable.

Timings for the day (Saturday & Sunday)

10 - 10.30am Arrival

10:30-2pm - First session

2-3pm - Break (Lunch not provided, but there are many nice places close by!)

3pm-5:30pm - Second session

6pm - Venue closes


Handpans will be available for use on course days free of charge.

A limited number of our parners’ handpans will also be available for purchase.
